Why Can’t I See Someone’s Facebook Story? 8 Common Reasons
Expired stories, audience settings, muting, blocking and app glitches — the eight most common reasons a Facebook story won’t show up, and how to fix each one.

You know they posted a story, but it isn’t showing up for you — in the app or in a story viewer. Almost every case comes down to one of the reasons below. Work through them in order; the first three explain most situations.
1. The story has expired
Facebook stories stay live for 24 hours. After that they move to the owner’s private archive and nobody else can see them — not in the app and not through any tool.
2. The story isn’t public
Every story has an audience. Owners can share with the Public, with Friends, or with a Custom list. If you’re not in the audience, the story simply isn’t shown to you. Anonymous viewers such as Facebook Story Viewer can only show stories set to Public.
3. They haven’t posted a story right now
A profile only shows the story ring while at least one story is live. Many people post stories irregularly, so “no active stories” is the most common answer — try again later.
4. You muted their stories
Facebook lets you mute someone’s stories without unfriending them, and it’s easy to do by accident. Muted stories move to the end of your stories tray or disappear from it. Open the person’s profile and look for an option to unmute their story.
5. They hid their story from you
Owners can hide their stories from specific people. If they did, their stories won’t appear for your account, even if they’re friends-only and you’re a friend.
6. You’re blocked, or the account is gone
If someone blocked you, or deactivated or deleted their account, you won’t see their profile or their stories.
7. The link isn’t a profile link
Story viewers need a profile or Page link such as facebook.com/username, a profile.php?id= link, a profile share link from the Facebook app (facebook.com/share/…), or a story link. Links to posts, groups, events or reels don’t point to a story tray.
8. An app or browser glitch
If the story should be visible, update the Facebook app, restart it, and check your connection. On the web, try refreshing or another browser. In our tool, temporary Facebook links can expire after a few hours — searching the profile again fixes it.

- Was the story posted in the last 24 hours?
- Is its audience set to Public (for anonymous viewing)?
- Have you muted, or been hidden from, their stories?
- Are you using a profile link rather than a post or group link?
